Iceland is a land of extremes—a place where fire meets ice, where towering glaciers sit beside active volcanoes, and where nature’s raw beauty is on full display.

If you're seeking adventure, Southern Iceland is a dream destination. From dramatic waterfalls and black sand beaches to powerful geysers and glacial lagoons, this region is packed with must-see sights.

Join me, as I take you through some of the top sites in Southern Iceland, complete with insider tips and enjoy my breathtaking drone footage.

Þingvellir National Park – A Meeting of Continents

Your Icelandic adventure should begin at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in history and geology. This is where the European and North American tectonic plates converge, creating a stunning rift valley that you can walk—or even snorkel—through. The crystal-clear waters of Silfra offer a once-in-a-lifetime chance to swim between two continents. Just be prepared for some seriously cold water!

The Town of Geysir – Nature’s Spectacle

Did you know that all geysers in the world get their name from one place? Geysir, Iceland! While the original Geysir is now mostly dormant, its neighbor, Strokkur, erupts every five minutes, shooting steaming water high into the air. Watching this natural display is mesmerizing—and perfect for capturing on video.

Gullfoss – Iceland’s Golden Waterfall

A short drive from Geysir brings you to Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. This massive, multi-tiered cascade plunges into a deep canyon, creating an awe-inspiring display of raw power. On sunny days, the mist from the falls often creates stunning rainbows—making for an unforgettable photo op.

Vík – A Seaside Base for Adventure

Heading eastward, the charming coastal town of Vík serves as the perfect home base for exploring Southern Iceland. The area is famous for its black sand beaches, sea stacks, and dramatic coastal cliffs. Nearby, you can also embark on a guided hike across the mighty Katla Glacier, offering a chance to walk on ancient ice formations and explore breathtaking ice caves.

Skógafoss & Seljalandsfoss – The Twin Waterfall Wonders

No trip to Iceland is complete without visiting its legendary waterfalls:

- Skógafoss – A towering, powerful waterfall where you can climb a staircase for panoramic views from the top. Don’t forget to explore the hidden cascades beyond!

- Seljalandsfoss – Unlike most waterfalls, you can walk behind Seljalandsfoss, giving you an incredible 360-degree perspective. Just be ready to get a little wet!

For those who love hidden gems, Gljúfrabúi Waterfall is just behind Seljalandsfoss, nestled in a narrow canyon—an absolute must-visit.

Jökulsárlón & Fjallsárlón – Iceland’s Glacial Lagoons

If you have extra time, continue eastward to witness Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón, two glacial lagoons where icebergs float in tranquil waters. You can even hold a piece of glacier in your hand at Diamond Beach, where crystal-clear ice chunks wash up on the black sand, creating an otherworldly scene.

Múlagljúfur Canyon – Iceland’s Hidden Gem

Of all the incredible places I’ve visited, Múlagljúfur Canyon stands out as one of the most beautiful. With cascading waterfalls, deep green cliffs, and a dramatic sense of scale, this hidden wonder is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets. If you love hiking and breathtaking landscapes, this is a must-see.

Essential Iceland Travel Tips

1. Weather Can Change Fast – Even in summer, conditions shift rapidly. A puffer vest and waterproof outer shell will keep you comfortable.

2. Drones Are Restricted at Many Tourist Sites – But don’t worry! Iceland is filled with wide-open landscapes, and you can easily pull over to capture stunning aerial footage.

3. Respect Nature – Iceland’s beauty is fragile. Stick to marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and follow local regulations to help preserve this incredible land.

Why Iceland Should Be on Your Bucket List

With 81 countries across all seven continents under my belt, I can confidently say that Iceland ranks in my top three destinations of all time. Whether you're a nature lover, adventure seeker, or photography enthusiast, Southern Iceland will leave you speechless.   - Happy Travels!
