If your family is looking for an adventure-filled vacation, then you should definitely check out Highlands Ski Resort, located at the very tip of Michigan’s Mitten.

Known as the Water and Winter Wonderland, Michigan certainly lived up to its name during our trip—we were lucky enough to enjoy over 20 inches of fresh snowfall, creating perfect powder conditions for skiing and snowboarding.

With 435 acres and 55 runs, this resort offers something for everyone. The European-style lodges, scenic ponds, and snow-filled trees make it one of the most picturesque properties I’ve ever visited. What stood out the most was the variety of lifts and runs available for all skill levels. Our kids, who were new to snowboarding, started off on the Magic Carpet for easy access to the bunny slopes. As they gained confidence, they transitioned to bigger runs like Lois Lane.

For those at an intermediate level, runs like Little John provided the perfect balance of challenge and comfort. My husband, an experienced skier, enjoyed the thrill of blue runs and black diamonds—all within the same property. He wore a snowboard jacket which is essential for a variety of winter sports. With a total of eight lifts, getting around was a breeze. My personal favorite was the Camelot Lift, which featured footrests and a windscreen—an absolute lifesaver on windy days at the top. I’m glad I brought along a good quality winter coat for the cold weather. To explore more of the resort, the newly remodeled Interconnect Lift was a fantastic way to get across the park in just seven minutes, offering a well-deserved break for our legs.

When we weren’t on the slopes, we found ourselves unwinding in the resort’s hot tubs and heated pools. The main lodge features a spacious hot tub and a nearby heated pool, perfect for larger groups. The kids had a blast splashing around while the adults relaxed. For a more private experience, the Bartley House offers a hybrid hot tub-pool with a breathtaking view of the slopes, heated to a cozy 98°F with jets just like a traditional hot tub. For thrill-seekers, snow banks nearby provide an adrenaline rush for those brave enough to take a dip.

Here are a few quick travel tips to enhance your stay:

- Check-in at the Discovery Center, the first building on the right before reaching the lodge. Adults can enjoy complimentary mimosas while learning about all the resort’s activities.

- Take advantage of free activities, including ice skating, a kids’ activity room, arcade, Highland cows, s’mores nights, and movie screenings.

- Utilize the free shuttle, which we found incredibly convenient for getting around the resort multiple times a day.

- Consider staying at the townhouses if you’re traveling with a group. They offer cost savings with self-catering options while still granting access to all resort amenities.

- Visit Monday through Wednesday to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience on the slopes.

Highlands Ski Resort offers an unforgettable experience for families and groups alike, with something for everyone to enjoy. Don’t forget to take along some ski trip essentials like insulated overallssnow suits, and ski mask and goggle sets to stay warm and have a great winter getaway.  - Happy travels!
