"Escape the hustle and bustle of Portland with a quick road trip to Cannon Beach—just 80 miles west—and discover stunning beaches, mouthwatering food, and the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Whether you're a nature lover, a foodie, or just in need of some peace and quiet, Cannon Beach is a must-visit destination."
Visit the Iconic Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach
One of the most recognizable symbols of Oregon’s coast, Haystack Rock stands proudly on Cannon Beach. This massive monolith is one of the largest in the world and is a sight to behold. For easy access, park in one of the free public parking areas provided by the town. A short stroll down Ecola Court will lead you to the beach, where you can marvel at Haystack Rock up close.
But Haystack Rock isn’t the only natural wonder here. Nearby, you'll find other striking rock formations known as The Needles. These jagged sea stacks add to the dramatic beauty of the coastline, making it a photographer’s dream.
Explore the Tide Pools and Wildlife
Timing your visit to coincide with low tide is a must. During low tide, the base of Haystack Rock reveals a treasure trove of tide pools teeming with marine life. If you’re lucky enough to visit between April and July, you might even spot some of the local puffins that nest on the rock. Just remember, climbing on Haystack Rock is prohibited to protect its natural integrity, so admire it from the sand instead.
Fly a Kite or Enjoy the Calm
Cannon Beach is known for its breezy conditions, making it a paradise for kite flyers. However, if you happen to visit on a calm day, like I did, you’ll be treated to a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The stillness of the air and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore create a truly tranquil experience.
On my visit, I felt the cool breeze gently push the kite into the air, and the vibrant colors of the kite contrasted beautifully against the sky. Whether you’re looking to fly a kite or simply relax by the ocean, Cannon Beach offers something for every mood. Don't forget to pack your sunglasses and hiking pants—you'll want to be ready for anything that comes your way!
Best Places to Stay in Cannon Beach: Tolovana Inn
For a cozy and historic stay, check out the Tolovana Inn on the south side of Cannon Beach. This charming inn offers studio or suite options, many with stunning ocean views. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the amenities include a saltwater heated pool and an adults-only spa. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
You may find a great place to stay like this one on hotels.com, and many activities nearby with Viator.
Indulge in Local Flavors
Cannon Beach is a food lover’s paradise. Start your day with a visit to Sea Level Bakery, where you can enjoy a variety of baked delights, including a moist gluten-free and vegan berry muffin. The bakery is dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your furry friend along.
For lunch, head to Pizza a’ Fetta, where you can choose from a variety of delicious options, including gluten-free crusts for their 14-inch pies. And don’t forget to stop by Pilot House Distillery for a tasting of their spirits. I highly recommend trying the 140-proof absinthe, but they also offer a range of vodkas, whiskies, and gins to suit every palate.
Winter Magic
If you’re planning a winter getaway, Cannon Beach has its own unique charm during the colder months. Imagine frost-kissed sand glistening under the winter sun—it’s a magical experience you won’t soon forget. During winter, the town is quieter, and you can enjoy cozy fireside dinners or take part in the Cannon Beach Winter Festival. It’s a hidden gem for those who love peaceful, off-season getaways.
Just be sure to bring cold weather essentials, such as a blanket, long sleeve shirts, and boots with you and use the provided shoe cleaners or hose to remove sand from your footwear before heading back indoors.
Discover the Town’s History
Cannon Beach is steeped in history, and you can learn more about its origins by keeping an eye out for the historical sight markers scattered throughout the town. These markers provide fascinating insights into the area’s past, adding another layer of depth to your visit. Don’t miss the Cannon Beach History Center & Museum for a deeper dive into the town’s rich history.
Plan Ahead
Before you go, make sure to check the operating hours of shops and restaurants, as some may be closed on Mondays or have limited hours. A little planning will ensure you don’t miss out on any of the town’s culinary or retail gems.
Pro Tip: Visit in the off-season (fall or winter) to enjoy a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere with fewer crowds.
Final Thoughts
Cannon Beach has something for everyone, whether you’re after relaxation, adventure, or delicious food. Its stunning coastline, unique charm, and welcoming atmosphere make it a destination you’ll want to return to again and again.
So, pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready to fall in love with this Oregon gem. Happy travels!
