"This adventure will take you from the mountains to the sea, with stops at tropical botanical gardens, ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, and even a chance to snorkel with sea turtles."
Aloha! If you only have 3 days to spend on the eastern shore of the Big Island of Hawaii, I’ve got the perfect itinerary for you!
This adventure will take you from the mountains to the sea, with stops at tropical botanical gardens, ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, and even a chance to snorkel with sea turtles. Let’s dive in!
Day 1: Volcanoes and Ancient History
Start your journey by driving 45 minutes south from Hilo to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Pay the entrance fee, and head straight to the Kīlauea Visitor Center to get oriented. From there, take the Haʻakulamanu (Sulfur Banks) Trail, where you’ll see colorful sulfur crystals and volcanic gases rising from the ground. Pro tip: Stay on the marked pathways for safety and to protect the fragile environment.
Next, follow the signs to the Kīlauea Overlook for breathtaking views of the caldera and Halemaʻumaʻu Crater. The raw power of the volcano is awe-inspiring!
After soaking in the volcanic landscapes, hop in your car and drive to the Puʻuloa Petroglyphs. This 1.5-mile loop hike will take you to one of the largest collections of ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, with over 23,000 carvings. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the island’s rich cultural history. Don't forget to take a bag or backpack with you to carry your essentials while you enjoy your hike.
Day 2: Tropical Gardens and Waterfalls
On your second day, drive just 15 minutes north of Hilo to the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden. This lush paradise is filled with steep and lengthy pathways, so wear comfortable shoes, bring your sunglasses and plenty of water, and don’t forget bug repellent!
Take your time exploring the garden’s hidden waterfalls, ocean overlooks with crashing waves, and an incredible variety of tropical plants. It’s a photographer’s dream and a nature lover’s haven.
Day 3: Farmers Markets and Snorkeling with Sea Turtles
Kick off your third day at the Downtown Hilo Farmers Market. Expand your horizons by trying an in-season fruit you’ve never had before, like rambutan or lychee. The market is also a great place to pick up local crafts and souvenirs.
Of course, no trip to Hawaii is complete without a visit to the beach! Hilo is known for being the rainy side of the island, but with average water temperatures around 77°F, you’ll want to snorkel rain or shine. Take your swim trunks with you and head to Carlsmith Beach Park, just a few minutes south of downtown Hilo. There’s free parking to the left of the beach park, and you’ll likely spot green Hawaiian sea turtles swimming in the lagoon. Remember: These turtles are protected, so stay at least 10 feet away.
Final Thoughts:
This 3-day itinerary packs in the best of the Big Island’s eastern shore—volcanoes, tropical gardens, cultural history, and marine life. Whether you’re hiking, snorkeling, or simply soaking in the beauty, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories.
